THE FELDENKRAIS METHOD

History

The Feldenkrais Method is a form of physical movement performed with the intent of enhancing human functioning, which can lead to increased range of motion, improved flexibility and coordination. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984), the founder of this method, was a Russian-born physicist, mechanical engineer, educator, and martial artist. His experience in the martial arts, physiology, anatomy, psycholog, and neurology led to the development of The Feldenkrais Method.

Feldenkrais recognized that the physical functioning of the body acts as a reflection of one's self-awareness. He believed that movements represented learned, habitual patterns. These, in turn, could lead to physical and/or emotional problems.

What is Feldenkrais

What comes to mind when you imagine an elegant, efficient movement? Do you visualize the breathtaking leaps of a dancer, the grace of an Olympic ice skater, or the precise movements of a martial artist? The truth is that elegant movements can be seen everywhere: from reaching to a top shelf for a box of cereal to running down a flight of stairs. Your everyday movements can be as fluid as a dancer, and as efficient as an athlete.

Feldenkrais includes sequences of movements that are performed slowly, gently and in pain-free ranges with awareness of breathing patterns. Functional improvements allow for increased sensitivity to new ways of movement.

Feldenkrais at the Center

AWARENESS THROUGH MOVEMENT is the form in which a Feldenkrais practitioner verbally guides individuals through a slow, gentle, non-strenuous sequence of movements. The repetition of these movements allows one to discover how to move more comfortably and efficiently. As one learns to relax and abandon habitual patterns, increased awareness, flexibility, and coordination evolve naturally.

FUNCTIONAL INTEGRATION is a learning process in which movements are communicated through slow, gentle instructive touch instead of by verbal directions. Movements are individually tailored to the specific needs of the individual. Functional Integration is especially useful for those who wish to learn to overcome limitations brought on by stress, illness, back problems, or injuries. It also helps one feel yonger and better, both physically and mentally.

Scientific Studies

Numerous research investigations have been performed using The Feldenkrais Method. One recent study, conducted in Germany, evaluated the effects of The Feldenkrais Method in patients diagnosed with eating disorders. Subjects who participated in Feldenkrais classes demonstrated significant improvements in acceptance and familiarity with their bodies. Other results indicated an increase in self-confidence and a decrease in feelings of hopelessness. Many performers and athletes use The Feldenkrais Method to improve both performance levels and personal growth.

About Our Instructor

Terry Hemlock is a Physical Therapist who practices PT and the Feldenkrais Method at the Mind-Body Wellness Center. After earning degrees in sociology and physical therapy, he completed a four-year Feldenkrais professional training program, and was certified through The Feldenkrais Guild, an international organization that maintains professional standards of practitioners and provides a range of informative materials for the public. Terry has practiced The Feldenkrais Method since 1991, and has worked extensively with Dr. Bittman. He offers classes and workshops at the Center. His caring and supportive approach has helped many people to overcome obstacles and maximize the quality of their lives.
