The Boomerang Effect: It’s bound to come back and hit you!

By Barry Bittman, MD

If you believe that I’m about to discuss those odd-shaped throwing sticks that twirl wildly through space and predictably return to the hurler, think again!

Despite a rather brisk global resurgence of interest in what may have originated as an aboriginal gizmo, I’ve never even held a boomerang.  Better yet, based upon a rather unimpressive personal track record in golf, my family would venture to wager that if I attempted to launch one, I’d probably never find it again!

Frankly, I’m not about to try.  I don’t have to¾ I live the boomerang effect every day!  In fact, I’ll let you in on a secret¾ we all do, even if we don’t realize it.

Whether one explains a universal law according to quantum physics or metaphysics doesn’t really matter.  I’m convinced that regardless of your approach, understanding how it works does not alter its effect.

In essence, the boomerang effect is more easily experienced than understood.  In the final analysis, the key to positively changing our lives is awareness of the phenomenon, and that simply changes everything.

For when we begin to notice that the boomerang effect is triggered by every one of our actions, life, itself, becomes more fulfilling.  Order emerges from chaos, answers surface from a sea of confusion, and our pathway in life becomes illuminated with greater certainty than ever before.

When we begin to understand that every action/intention invariably comes back to us, and not necessarily from the direction toward which it was directed, our personal struggles progressively lessen.  It soon becomes apparent that anger, frustration, and greed predictably reflect back upon us, just as imparting care, concern and devotion boomerang back from directions never imagined in our wildest dreams.  Respect for our fellow man and woman magnificently sculpts our lives, while gossip and slander degrade our existences.

You may be doubting that the boomerang effect actually exists beyond my belief and imagination.  Perhaps, you accept the possibility, but are convinced that in order to make it work in a positive way, you have to drastically change your life.  I assure you that this is not the case.  The boomerang effect is well within your grasp.

Consider this simple experiment.  Before the end of this day, do a good deed for a person from whom you expect no thanks.  Better yet, do it for someone who you haven’t particularly liked in the past, or give of yourself anonymously.  The only rule is that your intention must be based upon giving and not expecting to receive anything in return.

For those who are searching for a way to begin, you might consider some of my favorite words of advice from an unknown author, “Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty.”

Then, simply open your eyes and your heart.  Over the next several days and weeks, become aware of what comes to you from directions other than that to which you extended yourself.  I cannot predict what will occur, but I am certain that you will receive precisely what you need.  Better yet, (this is where the real magic begins) you will become keenly aware of the connection, remote as it may seem, from your initial act of kindness or humanity.

And when you realize the nature of that incredible connection, you will have experienced the concept of synchronicity, or awareness of coincidences.  Better yet, you will finally understand that on the highest level, there are no coincidences¾ Mind over Matter!
